Do be careful as you go through the streets of Vrahassi. Many of them have been dug up to facilitate a new water supply system. There are great gaping holes along roads, down steps, across cobbles. Word is that when it is finished the pavers are going to come in and make new streets for Vrahassi. It's going to look very smart. All things come to he who waits!

This picture was taken in Rethymnon last week. There were all sorts of other interesting shops too. Rethymnon is definitely on my list for a 'Christmas Shopping' trip.

Now you may be wondering what I have been up to for the past week. Well, I have certainly not been idle. Every spare minute (that is when I have not been doing domestic things) I have been finishing off the manuscript of the book that I have written in order to get it ready for the printers. 70,000 words take some checking. Anyway by Monday I hope to have wrapped it up and sent to the publisher. SO WATCH THIS SPACE FOR JANE'S FIRST NOVEL. Of course I will let you know the minute that it is available on Amazon or at your local bookshop, and I will be organizing book signing venues. I estimate that the book will come out about March time so you have plenty of time to save up to buy your copy (and it will be paperback so we are not talking megga bucks!)
So, you can tell, I have been a little preoccupied lately. I hope to be out and about next week to find out what is happening in the Village. Certainly there is no sign of Christmas in Vrahassi, YET.

Αυτό το έντομο είναι μια απειλή στα ενδημικά κρητικά δάση φοινικών σε Βάι και Πρέβελη και πρέπει να καταβληθεί κάθε προσπάθεια που θα καταφέρει να σταματήσει την καταστρεπτική του μανία. Έχει βρεθεί και στον Άγιο Νικόλαο αλλά και κατά μήκος της ακτής μεταξύ Ηρακλείου και Μιλάτου, όπου πολλά μολυσμένα δέντρα έχουν ήδη ξεραθεί. I received a mail from a friend today and thought the info may be useful. I have been to the English shop, it is a warehouse just before Liddle on the road to Kritsa, there is is a big Union Jack sign at the gate so you can't miss it. This is what my friend says about it:

... we went to the British Food shop on the way to lidl, we liked it and met Jane for the first time, I bought some things, and will be going back soon, she says she is getting stuff in for Xmas ie mince for pies and pies themselves also xmas cake and pudding, ready to roll icing and marzipan, this will arrive around mid October, she already has pickled onions in, this is what I remember seeing, Bisto granules and powder, Lyles golden syrup black and white, Branston, Marmite, Boveril, Vegimite,t-bags PG tips, Tetley, Yorkshire t-bags, McDougall flour plain and self raising and more stuff, she says she's expanding.

So, you can stock up for a very traditional British Christmas. How things have moved on in 15 years!

This is Emmanuella 'Em' for short. She is 7 years old. Her name day is on 25th December, she doesn't know what day her birthday falls on. I have known Em for a couple of years because she used to wait in my office in the centre of Vrahassi, for her sister, Maria, to finish school so that they could walk home together. I wish all those ladies with the name 'Maria' a 'Happy Name Day' for yesterday.
Celebrating her name day with the opening of 'Braxasiotiko Spiti' is Kiria Maria who showed us around her family home which, together with her sister, she has lovingly restored to create a folk museum. You can visit this traditional house and view the folk exhibition any day except Wednesdays and Sundays between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Admission is free.
My favourite exhibits are the sweeper and the ladies pyjamas. Let me know what your's are.

I have just been to look at 2 more houses for sale in the village. Make an offer but don't be silly about it.

House Number 1 is near to 'Platanos' and it is possible to get a car to the front door. The front of the house has had concrete columns put in but the back is an old 2 story building. Across from the back building and up a little way there is a total ruin of another building which is also for sale together with the house. An excellent property if you are looking for a renovation job. There is electricity to the house. Total area approx 100 sq metres.

This is my first video clip. Hope you like it. David and I have 110 olive trees on land around Vrahassi. This year the price of oil from the factory is less than 2 euros a kilo so David is better off building our house than spending time in the fields. However in two days with the help of Yiannis from Plateia Ouzerie, we have enough 'Extra Virgin Olive Oil' to see us through the year. Well done David and Yianni!

Well, know I know why I should stick to writing and not try to become a film star - I'm too wide and too short! David on the other hand looks the perfect partner for Jenni Falconer, the presenter of Fantasy Homes by the Sea, the name of a programme being filmed for Style TV (Sky). They needed a bit of 'fill in' for the programme so took a clip of David and I harvesting our olives. It was all very pleasant, the sun shone and we even managed a beer when it was over. Always something new in the life of Jane, eh?

Surveying the centre of Vrahassi, yesterday. Why? The only thing I could find out last night was that 'tenders' were being invited but for what I don't know. Could we be having a 'paved' plateia?

Monday was a most wonderful day. Julia Jones of 'Flowers of Crete', her botanist friend, Rosemarie, Gillian and four legged friend Spiros, Barbara, Yiorgos of 'Crete Sailing' and I walked from the Village across to the piece of land which David and I are keeping as a nature reserve. There the professionals found what they were looking for, ORCHIDS. They tagged over 70 individual orchids and spotted other indigenous flowers. Julia tells me that amongst the Orchids a very rare one is growing on our land and she has been in touch with the Botanical Gardens in London to identify it.
Now all this is very exciting and following soil tests etc it has been decided that our nature reserve should be available to the organisation of 'Flowers in Crete' as only the experts can make sure that these plants are preserved. Therefore David and I, together with Julia are to meet with a solicitor tonight to talk about the legalities of the such a union.
I will let you know the outcome, meantime I shall take another walk on Monday next with whoever wishes to come with me. We will leave Vrahassi at 10.30 a.m. Let me know if you are interested.

We had a full house last night, and I mean 'FULL'. It was standing room only for late comers but that didn't seem to matter. The entertainment was 'varied': classical music, country music, Greek clarinet music, and the poetry, some funny, some sad, some in English, some in Greek, some in Russian (yes Russian).
125 euro was raised for 'The Flowers of Crete' and everyone enjoyed the evening. For me it meant so much that the event had attracted artists from far and wide. Thank you to everyone. I'm sure we shall think of something else just as entertaining before too long. AND NOW MY 'NO SMOKING' POLICY IS OFFICIAL. AS FROM LAST NIGHT THE REVOLUTION CAFE BAR WILL HAVE A 'CLEAN AIR' POLICY. OUT WITH THE ASH TRAYS AND IN WITH 'HEALTH'. Now, I do know that this policy is going to upset some of my customers and I am very sorry for that, please don't take it personally, I do hope you will still pop in (and pop out for a smoke if you want). How to make friends and influence people eh? Am I the first Cafeneo in Crete to become a none smoking place? There is one thing for sure, I won't be the last!

And if you all think that I have been relaxing for the past few days, think again. It is all go in the land of Sharps. The house is coming on now, I went up there today and David was busy putting a bathroom door in. The beams are all stained and the painting has begun. Wont be long before the tiles are going down and then we're in business. I just can't wait to unpack all my pots and pans and be able to cook something. Speaking of which, it's tea time. Thank God for microwave ovens!

I am also planning the re-opening of the bar. It wont be yet. We shall stick to the two day week for now, but when the weather is better and all is 'outside' then I'll get out the cocktail sticks and see what I can produce. (No cooking of course!). I hope to have new chairs and tables but that will depend on whether I can find some good second hand ones. If you know of anyone refurbishing their place for summer maybe you could let me know.

Are you still well people from Tesco. It does seem a long time since your holiday. I think you sharing 'that' day with me bonded our friendship, don't you. I do hope all is well with you. Yes, it's one of those, 'thinking back' moments. Oh the wonderful times my little pergola has brought me!

If it is roast pork, lamb or chicken you want, then here is the man for you. We all ate heartily at 'Stephanie's' a new restaurant that has opened at Krasi (where the big tree is) up the mountain out of Malia. The food was delicious and the place was full. We got there early but by 1.30 there wasn't a table spare. The place was lovely and warm with a big open fire, and even though people were smoking the big extractor fans made sure that there was not one whiff of smoke. For the summer a lovely terrace area awaits outside diners.

Now, this is one of those old Cretan houses that is just crying out to be renovated. It is on the edge of the village overlooking the mountains. This is today's effort using conte crayon - an exercise in using tone. For homework we have to do 'hands'. Now that could be a bit more demanding.

Got to do some Greek homework now 'Pronouns'. I'm getting the hang of them but explaining how they are used is not so easy.

FLOWERS OF CRETE NATURE WALKS

In conjunction with FLOWERS OF CRETE there will be a weekly 'nature walk' beginning in February. The walk will begin and end in Vrahassi and will take in the old paths through the olive groves to a conservation area on the north slope of the hill opposite the village known as 'Pezoulia'. There are many orchids and other indigenous flowers to be seen and photographed. The walk will take approximately 1 hour to 'Pezoulia; and a stay of maybe 45 minutes and 1 hour back. We will set off at 10.30 a.m.

Well, it is 3rd January 2009. A New Year and time to be positive. It's not difficult. David is back from England safe and sound and we are already planning the year ahead.

Vrahassi is morbidly quiet, most people are busy in the olive groves harvesting their olives, or else keeping warm in the house. It's cold, but not as cold as could be even though there is snow on the mountains. I saw a couple of buzzards this morning circling over the valley, I dare say the vultures will be out later.

On 1st Jan I went along with Lydia and Mark and a few other English people, to join the villagers at the 'village hall' where the 'village council' cut the 'New Year' cake and gave out presents to all the children of the village. It was difficult to recognise who Agios Vassilis 'Father Christmas' was under his red costume and long white beard, but he did a good job. We all ate a chunk of cake, which was delicious, and were offered a drink of metaxa or orangeade. I bought one of the village calenders, remembering the first year that they produced one using my photographs, so many people have cameras now that I suppose they are spoilt for choice.

It was a proper 'village' do with no sign of higher local politics. The old school in the church yard which is used as the 'Silago' (Council) office was highly decorated both inside and out, good to see because I wondered where the usual centre of the village crib had got to this year.

Anyway, my fingers are freezing in the cold office so I'm going to finish now. Love to all.

NEW YEAR'S EVE IN AGIOS NIKOLOAS

No this isn't a new man in my life, I just borrowed him for a New Year picture. We lived it up in style, the only people out on the town in Vrahassi, but we got the works. Champagne and Agios Vassilli cake - and guess who got the lucky coin? ME! We were a party of 5 and we sang Old Lang Syne and saw in 2009 best we could. (By the way, the pram in the photo with Lydia has nothing to do with her).

What it's like to have good mates eh! These pics were taken at about 3 p.m. this afternoon. I'm so glad I went along with Lydia and Mark. The shops were open, there was music playing in the square, all the children were given a father christmas and everyone was jolly.

I've got a wonderful husband, a lovely dog, family that love me, friends that are just fantastic, a house that I can make a home, an opportunity to make money in my job, my creative side which gives me so much pleasure - music, writing, art, and, on top of all that a bar full of booze and a larder stocked with goodies. I'm ready for the New Year, let's just hope that the New Year is ready for me.

GREEK CLASS CHRISTMAS!

In the first half of the lesson I read the Nativity story (in Greek) to the class and we translated as we went along. We learned some interesting words like "εμφανίστικε" "appeared" and it was also a good opportunity to hear the story of Jesus. Because we all knew the story so well it was easier to translate. Following that we had a relaxed get together before the holidays. The next Greek class for those who can read (if not understand) the Greek language, will be held on the second Friday in January. Beginners class on the second Thursday in January. I think that is 8th Jan.

I only wish I could take a photo of the many Christmas lights that are twinkling in Vrahassi. Not only lights but lots of Father Christmas climbing up Chimney decorations too. Unfortunately all my Christmas lights are buried beneath my furniture and household goods that are in store awaiting removal to our new house. The bar has barely a hint of the festive season. Never mind, next year.

I have just been given information about a 2,000 sq meter plot of land with concrete structure ready to make into 2 or 4 flats in the middle of the plot. It is in the hills behind Malia and overlooks the sea. The structure is surrounded by mature trees. Full plans and permits are available. The asking price is 200,000 euro. Interested? After waiting almost a year to be connected to the main supply, I think David and Gail should be celebrating tonight. Luckily they won't be moving in until next year but it does mean that work can commence on their little holiday home and by the time they arrive they will be able to choose furniture and relax on their balcony, overlooking the Lasithioti Mountains. Congratulations!

But first another job for Bob the Builder! Thank God it is not our house, no, it is the one next door but the downpour we had last week was so bad that it brought the old wall down. There is only soil between the stones and it literally washed away, so before we can continue with our house this one has to have major surgery.
Of course, we definitely will not be in for Xmas now but never mind.

Just to let you know that Lefteris and Stella have had a little girl. All is well. Congratulations to both and welcome to the world to another Vrahassian.

Last night I went to the annual carol concert in Agios Nikoloas and it was very good. I'm almost in the Christmas spirit but not quite. Maybe next week when the lights go up in Vrahassi. My decorations, unfortunately will remain in their boxes as David informs me that the house will not be ready for Christmas. So, no tree this year but never mind, hopefully by the time we do move in I will have a kitchen and a bathroom and the trimmings can come out next year.

Today David and I went to Kera (above Malia) for lunch, Pork cooked in the big wood burning oven outside. It was extremely good.

I managed my cello practise before we went so just my art homework now, oh, and the book of course. Never a dull moment. Weather up in the 20's and blue skies. The olive trees look more perky after the rain of last week and there are sacks of olives piled up at the olive factory. Not ours though, we will harvest ours after Christmas.

So, I am all set for a busy week next week. I hope you, dear reader, wherever you are, are not too stressed about having everything ready for the holidays. If you are about to book to come to Crete for next year then don't forget to put Vrahassi on your itinerary of 'PLACES TO SEE'. It really is a wonderful, traditional village with lots of history, photo opportunities, home of the Griffon Vulture, habitat of orchids and a plethora of wild flowers, and... the Revolution Bar will be opening again for the summer season. I'm really looking forward to welcoming visitors from all over the world in 2009.

CHRISTMAS BAZZAR AT XERSONISSON

It was a jolly evening with Christmas music, the 'odd' Father Christmas bobbing about here and there amongst the crowd, tiny tots visiting the baby Jesus in the manger, festive food, drink, decorations, stalls with books, stalls with toys, lots of balloons and candy floss. But here, in Vrahassi things go on the same. It really is a bit early yet to be putting the trimmings up, give it another week. Because the bar is closed for the winter I wont be decorating here, but all being well will have my tree up at the house for Xmas Eve, lights and all.

NIKOS - NAME DAY

'ΚΡΟΝΙΑ ΠΟΛΛΑ' to all with the name Nikos. Shops in Agios Nikoloas are closed to day while the town celebrates its name day. It doesn't seem to have affected Vrahassi. All is quiet. I do know one or two Niko's though so better be ready with the 'Kronia Polla' which literally means 'many years' and is saying 'Many happy returns'.

David and I are going to friends for dinner tonight so we might miss any cakes that may be going at the cafeneon, then again maybe we should call for a drink before we go.

Happy weekend to all the family. We had such a bad line on the Skype the other night to England that we had to abandon it. Better luck tomorrow.

Tomorrow we are going to the Christmas Bazzar in Xersonissos to get in the spirit of things.

WAITING AT THE DOCTORS SURGERY

It was 'Bone Density' day at the Doctor's surgery in Vrahassi today and Lydia, Vanessa, Rosemarie and I went along to have the test for Osteoporosis. It was a simple test, my foot was put into what looked like a foot massage bath with a sort of 'shoe sizing' block inside that held it in place. The machine was switched on and a rubber balloon on each side of the ankle was gently inflated . It was all over in a couple of minutes but waiting for the results was another story. 2 hours later we talked to the Doctor, who was very approachable, and for my part told me that my bones were good. Excellent! It's not easy for the older people of Vrahassi to sit so long but the medical service provided was A1.

And this was the GOOD fairy! What a great night we had at the Rex in Agios Nikoloas on Saturday. We laughed, we clapped, we sang, we booed, it was everything a pantomime should be. THREE GENERATIONS OF VRAHASSIANS

I just thought it was a marvelous opportunity to ask Yanni to pose with his father, Niko, and his Grandfather, Dimitri. As we were chatting Niko told me that he was brought up in the family home which is now a total ruin very close to our new house, but he has been so busy bringing up his family and helping to run 'Plateia' that he has not seen the old place for years. It's a good photo, don't you think? Dimitri is fantastic at 97 years old.

THE DAY THE BATH ARRIVED!

Our floor tiles arrived today - Whoop, Whoop! And... THE BATH! Now, if you have followed my life for a while you will know that, although David and I lived in our last place for12 years 'ish', we never had an inside bathroom. We managed with a toilet and bathroom across the courtyard which was a bit chilly in the winter and a bit of a nuisance if it rained but other than that... well a bathroom is a bathroom. Anyway there is no way that I am moving in to our new place unless the plumbing is up and running, so in good time for our Christmas Eve removal date, 'Voila!' the bath has arrived. Let's hope the joiner sticks to his promise of a door and windows in the next 4 weeks. The arch is cleaning up well and David has started to build the chimney. Of course we needed a drink after the delivery - it wasn't so much the hard work as the spending of money that prompted a glass of wine.

SATURDAY FOOTBALL IN MALIA

My first football match (even though I'm a Chelsea supporter). This one was in Malia and those of you who know people of Vrahassi may well spot Dimitri number 30. He was on good form (click on the picture for full screen) and his team, Malia, beat Dias Heraklion by 3 goals to nil. All great goals and well deserved. I went to the match with Lydia, Mark and Vanessa and it was a very pleasant way to spend a Saturday afternoon. Looking at picture number 3 far right, Dimitri is certainly showing his agility.

It was a sort of meeting, cum get together, cum Cretan tea party. Now did you ever see the like in Vrahassi. Γιαννις set to work making us a fantastic table of mezedes while we women discussed the finer things of life. And who was the star - Σοφια, next generation Vrahassian taking the lead from her proud father.

GREEK CLASS DINNER IN NEAPOLIS

I put the bling on last night to attend our pre-Christmas dinner. We were a party of 15 altogether and we enjoyed a splendid night out at the ΜΕΖΕΔΟΠΩΛΕΙΟ ΤΑΩΕΡΝΑ in Neapolis. As ever, the food was delicious, the restaurant was warm and the service excellent. If you have never been then I can thoroughly recommend it. Everyone had the chance to try out their Greek. So now we are back to saving our one euro per person per week that goes into the pot at every lesson.

The free Greek classes given by the Council of Agios Nikoloas are to start again soon although the funding has been restructured and the classes given will be primarily for immigrants. These classes may be a little more demanding but David and I have signed up anyway. We really want to make the most of our winter.

My new music book 'Method for Cello' A C Piatti, arrived yesterday just in time for my lesson tomorrow. Today's art class went well, I am sure learning things that I didn't know before.

The electricity was off in the village this morning and workmen were beavering about. I didn't find out what the problem was but by lunch time all was well.

MY STATS ARE DOWN!

'ANAVLOHOS' at 11 a.m. this morning, just before it tippled down with rain.

OOH BUGGER! My 'Stats' are down, (better than my nickers I suppose - joke!) So, I suppose because my life seems a bit boring I have lost a few blog watchers. Your loss mates because things are looking up and my new lover 'Valentino' is tuning up very nicely, and has a very baritone voice. I may even make a small video of the two of us together. Now you don't want to miss that, do you?

Meanwhile here are a few pictures of derelict property in Vrahassi that tell of times gone by. I don't think that they are for sale, and how much longer they will stand I don't know. It will certainly be a shame to see them go.

Oh, and, my life is definitely not boring at the moment. I took my permit for the bar a couple of days ago and I am very happy about that. Even so we are on a two day a week winter which means that I can take Greek classes on Thursday and Friday and also that I can do what the hell I like with the other days. We have stacked up the chairs outside and covered them against the elements for the winter. Our plan is to open again for the season, in the Spring, freshly painted and raring to go.

So, to all our past customers can I say a big 'Thank You' for your support and I look forward to seeing you all again next year (unless you come to Greek Class that is and then I hope to see you next week).

LAND FOR SALE ON COAST - MILATOS

Here is my little helper sorting out the books on the 'EXCHANGE YOUR BOOK HERE' shelf.

A request to find a buyer for 5 strem of land on the coast at Milatos has just come to my attention. I don't have full details yet but if you are interested please contact me.

I bet you wondered where I was. I don't know where the week has gone. Wednesday I went for my first cello lesson. It was great and I enjoyed learning about how to sit properly and hold the instrument, a little bowing technique and open string sounds.

Wednesday evening I went to Xersonissos where I had arranged to help a group of people with beginners' Greek.

Yesterday was my weekly beginners' class in Vrahassi and I have just finished preparing my lesson for this afternoon. This evening David and I are going to a meeting at the school in Ag Nik to discuss the classes organised by the Council. We shall get a bite to eat on the way back and then it's music practise etc.

I have a notice on the office wall about registering to vote in the European Elections. What it amounts to is that if you would like to Vote in the European Elections of 7 June 2009 then you should register to Vote at your local Council office. Please take your passport with you.

NEW PIANO!

My new piano finally arrived! It is a Yamaha electronic keyboard but has weighted keys and plays (almost) like a real piano. I am so happy with it. I did spend my 'chandelier' money but I can always save up again, and, let's face it, ye can't play a Mozart sonata on a chandelier! The piano stool is the one I bought when I was 18 years old and it has travelled everywhere with me.

And... it is drizzling a little in Vrahassi. We really need the rain for the olives so let's hope that we get more than just a drizzle.

It is Sunday, a bit grey here and has that feel of 'lets curl up in front of the fire with a good book' day. Some people are chopping and stacking wood in readiness for the cold weather. Others have just returned from Church, some are sitting at the cafeneon and David and I are in the office at our computers. It's a normal Sunday.

We did manage a stroll around the village this morning and I took some pictures of Cretan Doors to add to my collection. We have decided to have a stable door on our house to match the shutters on the windows. Yesterday's trip to Heraklion to order kitchen units amounted to nothing as the shop that we went to didn't seem to have the right design and they could not deliver to Vrahassi. We will try Agios Nikoloas next week.

So, more later, have to make some lunch, soup I think, it is that sort of day.

NEW VILLAGE STORE

Work continues on the new village store. Today the workmen were polishing up the black marble floor, it looks wonderful.

Weather wise, we did have a little rain yesterday and temperatures are down but today has been fine, so far, and a nice, bright day.

Art class yesterday... am I getting better? She's a bit scary eh? My effort came in for a lot of criticism but I was trying. Back to the drawing board as they say.

Best news of the week... I have found a cello. It is wonderful and I can already play 'Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star'. My lessons begin next week, meanwhile I have to get up that bit earlier to put a little practice in every day.

I suppose people will be starting to clear their olive groves soon ready for the harvest. We wont be doing ours till after Christmas - house first, olive grove second. But in a way I am looking forward to a few days of excersise in the fresh air.

Must push on, things to do.

AGIOS MINAS - NAME DAY 11 NOVEMBER

It will be a big day in Heraklion tomorrow as the Cathedral, one of the largest churches in Greece, built in 1895, is named after the martyred St Minas. Minas was a Roman soldier but a Christian and when he announced his belief in Christ he was persecuted, tortured and finally beheaded.

On the same day all those with the name Viktoros/Victor also celebrate their 'Name Day'.

I shall be celebrating tomorrow also... why?... Because I have finally found a cello and will begin lessons. (It's as good an excuse as any).

So, have a good Agios Minas day tomorrow wherever you may be.
